Jagex Reveals RuneScape 4, Its New MMO

RuneFest 2026 is finally here, and Jagex is coming out swinging, dropping major announcements one after another. But easily the biggest news so far is that Jagex is officially launching a fourth MMO in the RuneScape franchise.
RuneScape 4
That’s right, you are hearing or reading that correctly. Jagex is officially expanding the RuneScape franchise with a fourth MMO, but the funny part is, it’s been hiding in plain sight this entire time.

If you remember the original 2026 RuneScape Dragonwilds roadmap, you might remember a section about “Shadows of Ashenfall” coming in 2027. Jagex originally designed the expansion to transform Dragonwilds into a more traditional MMO experience, with player feedback shaping its development.
The idea was to keep Dragonwilds’ unique art style while adding persistent servers, higher player counts, and plenty of social features. Imagine Dragonwilds with social hubs, player trading, and all the other features you’d expect from a proper MMO.
However, as the team continued working on the project, the scope started to grow, and it became clear that Shadows of Ashenfall was heading in a completely different direction. What was originally going to be a Dragonwilds expansion had evolved into something much bigger.
The project eventually grew into a brand-new standalone MMO, with Jagex officially revealing it as RuneScape 4.
The project is still in development, and there is currently no release window. So, hopefully, we’ll get to see more of RuneScape 4 as Jagex continues to build it out, with more details hopefully coming in 2027.
