The highly anticipated Guns of Eschaton has finally dropped its demo, opening the gates to the Old South and inviting players to take on the undead horrors lurking throughout the West or, for those brave enough, challenge the Black Rider himself.

1,000 Ways to Die

Guns of Eschaton just dropped its brand-new demo, but this isn’t your average early peek at the game. Instead, the developers built the demo as a hand-crafted adventure that lets players experience the world, atmosphere, combat, enemies, weapons, and other core systems firsthand.

The demo isn’t the campaign’s opening chapter, nor is it meant to be a complete slice of the Guns of Eschaton experience. The full game will take players much further than the chaotic West, eventually bringing them to the East of the burning Old South as well.

As for what awaits you in the demo, you’ll encounter enemies that wouldn’t normally appear in this area of the full game. You’ll also get the chance to face a boss and experience the core of what Guns of Eschaton is all about: deadly gunfights, learning from every encounter, and getting a feel for this unique soulslike FPS.

And honestly, the combination of those two genres works surprisingly well.

More Than Just Bullets

Take breaking an enemy’s guard, or poise, for example. Instead of simply giving you an opportunity to land a visceral attack, Guns of Eschaton slows everything down and kicks in bullet time. It feels like a much better fit for a game built entirely around gunplay rather than trying to force traditional soulslike mechanics into the mix.

The weapons are another highlight. Each one feels distinct, with different firing timings, reload patterns, handling, and overall weight. There’s a real emphasis on making every weapon feel like its own tool rather than simply giving you a collection of guns with slightly different stats.

Mix all of that with a fantastic art style that blends the dusty Old West with cryptic, undead horrors, and Guns of Eschaton is already shaping up to be something pretty special.

We seriously recommend checking out the demo while you can. If this early taste is anything to go by, Guns of Eschaton will be a massive hit when the full game finally arrives.
