Jagex Reveals New Details About RuneScape 4

Following the recent bombshell announcement that Jagex is working on RuneScape 4, a brand-new MMO set in the RuneScape universe, the developers have now dropped even more details. A new post on the official website answers some of the biggest questions surrounding the game, including when and where it will take place in the RuneScape timeline.
A New RuneScape

For more than 25 years, player feedback and the community have shaped the world of RuneScape. Originally, RS4 began as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, but after hearing players ask for more MMO-style social features, Jagex decided to take the project in a much bigger direction.
Now, that project has evolved into a fully fledged MMO.
However, the developers want to make one thing abundantly clear: RuneScape 4 will not replace any of Jagex’s existing games. That includes RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and especially Dragonwilds. While RS4 will share Dragonwilds’ art style and some of its DNA, all four games will continue to coexist as their own separate experiences.
Where Does the Journey Begin?

As for where RS4 will take players, we’re heading back to Gielinor, but during the Sixth Age.
The developers have confirmed that the adventure will begin in Ashenfall, the area first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The region is located on a landmass northeast of Gielinor and will serve as the starting point for this new chapter.
RS4 will take place years after the events of Dragonwilds and the defeat of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, which marked the first saga of Dragonwilds. Since then, the world has continued to change, and Ashenfall has changed right alongside it.
And according to Jagex, this is only the beginning.
The Start of Something New
Naturally, announcing an entirely new RuneScape MMO has raised a ton of questions. Which platforms will it launch on? Will it use existing accounts? What about Membership? How will progression, combat, and skills work? Most importantly, when can we actually play it?
Unfortunately, Jagex doesn’t have all of those answers just yet, and the developers aren’t ready to talk about most of them. However, they have confirmed a few important details about what we’re getting with RuneScape 4:
- It’s a brand-new RuneScape MMORPG built in Unreal Engine.
- It will exist alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and Dragonwilds as an independent experience.
- It will remain true to RuneScape’s principles of integrity, permanent progression, and community-driven development.
- It will be set in Gielinor, beginning in Ashenfall.
- It’s still a few years away, but Jagex is announcing it now because the developers want to build the game alongside the community.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about RuneScape 4, but at least we now have a much clearer picture of where this new MMO is taking us. And honestly, if Jagex really intends to build this one alongside the community, we’re in for a very interesting few years.
