Sometimes the best ideas are left in the past, waiting to be unearthed. Sometimes, recreating those ideas falls flat, but every once in a while a true spinoff comes along, bringing back the same style, theme, and philosophy with a neat twist. If you’ve been wanting to get your hands on a gory, brutal RPG dungeon crawler, Heathen is for you.

What is Heathen?

Heathen is a dark fantasy dungeon crawler that takes heavy inspiration from the “one town, one dungeon” philosophy found in old-school dungeon crawlers like the original Diablo. The objective is simple: battle monsters and other horrors, uncover powerful magical items, loot, and grow stronger.

When you aren’t delving into the depths, you can seek refuge in the town of Saltgrave above. Restock your supplies and enjoy a brief respite before venturing back into the keep, aiming to delve a little deeper each time you enter the dungeon.

Choose from a variety of classes and forge your own playstyle. Pick from the Mercenary, Cutthroat, or Acolyte. Shape your character and your build by investing in various attributes, equipping various weapons and armor, and of course mastering spells.

Heathen aims to bring true horror back to the ARPG mix, and it looks awesome while doing it. Combat can be nerve-racking one minute and straight out of an action film the next. This is mainly because of the crazy moments this game can have, like decapitating an undead, throwing its detached head at another enemy, then kicking that same head into a third enemy.

That last part is clearly drawing a lot of attention, as Heathen has amassed 60,000+ Wishlists on Steam at the time of writing. Sadly, we don’t know when a demo is dropping or when the official release date is, but we highly recommend wishlisting to stay up to date with what the developer is cooking up down in that dungeon.
