Final Fantasy Resonance has taken Steam by storm, hitting 27,933 concurrent players and securing the #3 spot for the biggest single-player Final Fantasy launch on PC.

Within just 24 hours of its release, Square Enix has brought players back to the series’ classic roots, combining familiar combat and a beautiful pixel-art world with a modern blend of 2D and 3D visuals. But what’s particularly interesting is that Resonance also has ties to the now-discontinued Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, giving players a chance to revisit a story that originally debuted as a mobile RPG.

A Return to Classic Final Fantasy

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new Final Fantasy experience lean so heavily into the series’ classic RPG roots. With its pixel-art characters, traditional turn-based combat, and colorful world, Resonance feels like a love letter to the franchise’s earlier adventures, all while bringing a fresh coat of paint to the formula.

Of course, there’s more to this release than nostalgia alone. Final Fantasy Resonance reimagines and adapts the story of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which originally launched as a mobile RPG before its service was discontinued. Now, Square Enix is giving that adventure a new life as a standalone experience, complete with revamped gameplay and a gorgeous visual style that blends 2D pixel art with 3D environments.

For longtime fans, this offers another opportunity to experience the story in a new way, while newcomers can jump in without needing to have played the original mobile game.

With nearly 28,000 players jumping into the adventure on Steam alone, Final Fantasy Resonance is already off to a promising start. It’s still too early to say what this means for the franchise’s future. But its early success shows that there’s plenty of interest in a traditional Final Fantasy game, especially when it mixes with fresh visuals.
