Moon Studios just dropped a massive 27-minute No Rest for the Wicked Inside Showcase about their upcoming Class System, and how it will let players not only build their character and navigate combat, but also tie into the game’s factions & questlines!

New Classes, Tons of Possibilities

Firstly, let’s get into the thick of things: the new class system that Moon Studios previously teased us with a while back. Today we finally got a major deep dive into how these systems work, and honestly, it’s far more impressive than we were initally expecting.

So to start off, you can build your character any way you like. In No Rest for the Wicked, your class fantasy begins by using a weapon that’s associated with that class. If you use a dagger, you earn XP towards the Assassin class; use a Spear, and you make progress for the Dragoon.

Using specific weapons long enough lets you earn traits that further enhance that class fantasy. For example, you can earn a trait that gives you more damage with your Spear by hitting foes beyond 6 meters away. Once you hit someone that far away, you gain bonus range and damage for keeping them in that sweet spot until you block or take damage.

That trait is initally unlocked by being a Dragoon, or using Spears, but it doesn’t stay locked to that class. Once you earn those traits, you can use them with other builds. Use that new Dragoon range with the Archer class for even more damage and long-range firepower.

Each trait comes in the following slots:

  • Offensive
  • Defensive
  • Utility
  • Ascension

These slots let you mix and match multiple traits, but you are limited to 2 offensive & defensive traits, plus one utility and one ascension trait. Otherwise, what you throw in is up to you; you just have to earn the trait.

Real Stealth

During the showcase, Moon Studios also dives into the Stealth system, and unlike other Soulslikes or ARGs, stealth doesn’t really work in those games. But in No Rest for the Wicked, sound attracts foes, enemies have vision cones, and sneak attacks from behind can deal tons of damage or outright kill your target.

They heavily showcase this with the new Assassin Class. Invest enough, and you can soon turn invisible, slide along walls, or silence your running to sneak up on targets. Finally adding an optimal stealth build to a Soulslike.

But of course, with their class system, you can mix and match. You don’t have to go fully into the Assassin tree; you can mix it with other classes for a new flavor of stealth, or just get better nimble tools to deal with your foes.

Reimagining Stats

But that’s not all. No Rest for the Wicked is completely changing how leveling up and stats work. Unlike other ARGs or Soulslikes where every level up simply means you get to put a few points into health, stamina, or strength. Instead, you invest in Cores, which let you not only control those standard stat bumps but also access more upgrades.

Instead of simply upgrading your stamina or damage, why not increase your health regen, attack speed, life steal, carry weight, loot drop chance, or even remove your stat caps altogether?

You have a limit on your core capacity, but you can go above it for a price. Each point you go above your Core Capacity, you take more damage per point. Going 1 point over increases the damage you take by 10%, making your build stronger, but it can also make you die more easily.

Additional Highlights

There’s a ton that the No Rest for the Wicked Inside Showcase also gave players a small taste of. Some of it includes a better look at and understanding of breaking enemies’ guard, plus an update to the looting system. It also includes multiple combat changes, performance improvements, and more.

But easily one of the last things we want to highlight is the factions. No Rest for the Wicked features multiple factions, and all classes belong to one. Investing in or leveling up a certain class unlocks the ability to interact with that faction. Being part of a class does more than earn their trust; it lets you do quests, venture into their special areas, and follow entire storylines.

So there are plenty of extra reasons to try out all the classes, beyond aesthetics and combat prowess. Who knows, you might not entirely vibe with the Assassin, but you might want to try it just to get into their secret hideout.

Overall, this is a massive update for No Rest for the Wicked, and it’s very clear why Moon Studios called for that delay a few months back. Honestly, with all this they’ve been cooking up in the meantime, it’s more than worth the wait!
