As we get closer to the end of 2026, The Game Awards are becoming an increasingly hot topic among gamers. One question on many players’ minds is whether Grand Theft Auto VI will technically qualify for this year’s awards. Surprisingly, the answer is yes, but it will be a close call.

The Winner Takes it All

According to The Game Awards’ official rules, games must be released by Friday, November 20, at 9 PM PT to qualify for this year’s awards. With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, the game just barely makes the cutoff. The Players’ Voice award also runs through November 30, while the main ceremony takes place on December 10.

That means GTA 6 is eligible for the 2026 Game Awards despite arriving just one day before the deadline.

Naturally, plenty of die-hard fans are already eager to vote for Rockstar’s next massive open-world adventure. However, others are questioning whether a game released so close to the cutoff should be eligible at all. After all, several games and studios have reportedly shifted their release dates to avoid competing directly with GTA 6. So, should Rockstar’s game get a chance to sweep the awards just days after launch?

GTA 6 Recency Bias?

Recency bias is a real concern, and GTA 6 releasing just one day before the cutoff could put it in a unique position. Critics, fans, and the gaming industry will undoubtedly have the game on their minds throughout the awards season. With enough support, it could potentially win multiple categories despite having been available for barely three weeks by the time the ceremony takes place.

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time a major release has qualified so close to The Game Awards, and it probably won’t be the last. Still, with a game as massive as GTA 6, there’s a legitimate question about whether its enormous hype could overshadow other deserving nominees.

At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with GTA 6 earning awards if it delivers an overall great experience. However, it would be a shame if other developers and their games struggled to get the recognition they deserve simply because Rockstar’s latest release arrived right before the deadline.
