Fable, Squadron 42 and Danganronpa Move Away From GTA 6’s Launch

GTA 6 hasn’t even launched yet, and it’s already having a major impact on the gaming industry. With Rockstar’s highly anticipated open-world adventure set to arrive on November 19, 2026, several major developers and publishers are shifting their release schedules, hoping to avoid getting caught in its enormous shadow.
Three notable examples are Fable, Squadron 42, and Danganronpa 2×2. All three were originally going to arrive sometime in 2026, but have since moved into 2027. While not every developer has explicitly named GTA 6 as the reason, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Rockstar’s next major release is something the rest of the industry has to plan around.
Fable Moves to February 2027

Fable was originally going to launch sometime in Fall 2026, but Xbox has since pushed the highly anticipated RPG to February 23, 2027.
During an official Xbox podcast, Xbox Game Studios chief Matt Booty explained that the team wanted to give Fable a release window of its own, allowing the game to have its own moment to shine rather than competing with other major releases.
Xbox also acknowledged the crowded release calendar, specifically mentioning GTA 6 alongside several other major titles in its announcement. While the company never explicitly confirmed Rockstar’s game was the reason for the delay, moving Fable out of the Fall 2026 window certainly gives it some breathing room.
Squadron 42 Avoids the GTA 6 Attention Buzzsaw

Squadron 42, the highly anticipated single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe, is another major release that moved away from GTA 6.
Originally targeting Q4 2026, developer Cloud Imperium Games shifted the game to Q2 2027. Unlike some of the other examples, director Chris Roberts was very direct about the reasoning behind the decision.
Roberts explained that he didn’t want Squadron 42 launching into what he described as the “attention buzz saw of GTA 6.” With Rockstar’s game expected to dominate gaming coverage, social media, and content creation, the team felt that launching alongside it could make it much harder for Squadron 42 to get the attention it deserves.
Considering how long Squadron 42 has been in development, it’s understandable that the team wants to give the game as much attention as possible when it finally launches.
Danganronpa 2×2 Also Moves Away From GTA 6

Finally, we have Danganronpa 2×2, the upcoming murder mystery adventure from Spike Chunsoft. Originally planned for 2026, the game is now scheduled to launch on January 14, 2027.
The interesting part comes from comments made by series creator Kazutaka Kodaka and producer Shohei Sakakibara. During an interview, the developers discussed the decision to give the game additional development time while also acknowledging the looming release of GTA 6.
Other Games Are Moving Into 2027

Of course, these aren’t the only major games shifting their release schedules. No Rest for the Wicked, Moon Studios’ upcoming action RPG, also moved its full 1.0 release from October 2026 to March 2027.
However, the studio cited additional development time, performance improvements, and polishing as reasons for the move rather than explicitly mentioning GTA 6, which they recently showed off, and it was certainly the right call.
Still, with several major releases now occupying the early months of 2027, the window is becoming increasingly crowded for developers looking to avoid the holiday release rush.
GTA 6 Is Already Changing the Gaming Industry

While GTA 6 is still a few weeks away from launch, its impact on the gaming industry is already becoming clear. Developers and publishers know how much attention Rockstar’s next major release will attract, and competing for players’ time and media coverage during that window will be risky.
With November 19, 2026, getting closer, it’ll be interesting to see whether any other developers decide to give Rockstar some breathing room. However, so far only one game isn’t backing down from GTA 6: Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered, because why would the king of monsters be afraid of anything?
