Bungie Outlines the Future of Destiny 2 and Marathon

Bungie just released a new video and official blog post outlining the company’s future while taking accountability for its recent struggles. The developers made it clear that “they aren’t done with Destiny” and, as they look to the future of both the Destiny franchise and Marathon. Additionally, they are planning to actively bring old Destiny 2 content back from the vault.

In today’s announcement, Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and Josh Deane, Head of Product & GM of Marathon, sat fans down and talked about the company’s past and future, with a focus on what’s next for the Destiny series.

Bungie is taking accountability, saying they have lost players’ trust in recent years and want to get back to making great games that get players excited. They understand that it will take a long time to earn players’ trust back.

The biggest thing they are promising players right now is that they aren’t putting down the Destiny franchise. It will take the team time to develop and work out something brand new that players will love. But in the meantime, they are going to work on bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game.

They want players to keep giving feedback, ensure everyone’s voices matter, and hold them accountable when something goes wrong. But overall, they know Destiny is foundational to their future as a company, so they aren’t going to let that go.

The Future

As for Marathon. They say that Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but “was never intended to replace Destiny”. They acknowledge it didn’t reach as many players as they hoped, so they understand and will undertake the process of evolving the game and grounding it in what makes Marathon special.

As Bungie moves forward, they state they will measure themselves against these core commitments:

• Build a stronger long-term future for Destiny, while honoring and restoring its past.
• Evolve Marathon to grow our community and build a sustainable future.
• Increase transparency around development priorities.
• Communicate more consistently, especially when plans change.

While the hype and overwhelming excitement for Destiny’s revival is loud and clear, only time will tell whether Bungie can earn back the trust of its fanbase.
