Marathon Is Getting a Major PvE and PvP Overhaul

Bungie is back with another major update on Marathon, outlining the game’s current state and what players can expect as the developers look toward the future. Several updates are planned for October and December, with an even larger update currently slated for March.

Marathon’s Future

It’s no secret that enthusiasm surrounding Marathon has started to drop. Since launch, the game has gone through plenty of ups and downs in terms of player interest and popularity, especially as Bungie continues to juggle development across its major projects.

Now, Bungie is laying out a clearer roadmap for Marathon’s future. Following the recent announcements surrounding the wider Destiny franchise, the developers have provided a closer look at what’s coming to Marathon over the next several months.

First up is a Nightfall Refresh arriving in October, followed by the much larger Symbiosis expansion in December. Then, in March, Bungie is promising a much deeper experience connecting PvE, PvP, and PvEvP, alongside improved progression, more narrative content, new enemies, an entirely new zone, and a refactored Cradle.

The developers also say they are actively building toward:

Connected PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences
Different levels of intensity and commitment
More options for solo players and crews
More approachable ways to enter and learn the game
Experiences focused on cooperation, competition, and high-risk survival

Bungie also acknowledges that Marathon needs a dedicated PvE experience, something the team plans to address with the upcoming Symbiosis update.

Symbiosis will introduce Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode. We’re still finalizing parts of the experience and will share a deeper look before the update launches. Symbiosis will also introduce an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. This experience offers a more direct, lower-commitment way to sharpen your skills and compete without putting a full run at risk.
