From the creators of Hell Let Loose comes HUNGER, a new PvP extraction RPG set in a plague-ravaged version of Napoleonic Europe. Blending intense first-person combat with deep RPG progression, crafting, and survival, HUNGER is looking to bring something a little different to the extraction genre.

The developers have now opened up their closed beta as part of October’s Steam Next Fest, giving players a chance to jump into this grim, alternate version of Europe and see if they have what it takes to survive.

Death Isn’t the Worst Fate

HUNGER is a first-person RPG where your progression revolves around completing quests, surviving Expeditions, and mastering an interconnected skill system that evolves alongside your choices. You’ll need to do more than just keep yourself alive, as every Expedition brings its own dangers, from plague-ridden horrors to other players fighting for their own survival.

You can venture into the wastes alone or team up with friends in duos and trios. And unlike many extraction games, HUNGER features no forced wipes, meaning your character progression and story will persist as you continue your journey.

There’s plenty to do outside of Expeditions, too. Unlock new customization options, develop your skills, and visit the Chateau, a social hub where survivors can meet, interact through proximity VOIP, take on quests, and prepare for their next adventure. There’s even a player-driven marketplace, giving you another way to trade and make the most of your hard-earned loot.

What to Expect From HUNGER

HUNGER is heading into Early Access with plenty of content and systems for players to explore, with even more planned for the future. Here’s what the developers have outlined so far:

  • Three large, distinct maps, with more planned for the future.
  • Over 40 weapons at Early Access launch, with additional weapons coming later.
  • A huge variety of gadgets, medicines, and tools to help you survive.
  • Hybrid shooting and melee combat, combining gunplay with brutal close-quarters encounters.
  • Extensive customization, including characters, bags, and weapons, with most options unlockable for free through gameplay.
  • Deep, permanent RPG progression, allowing you to develop your skills and build your character around your preferred playstyle.
  • The Chateau hub world, where you can meet other players, interact with NPCs, visit quest givers, and explore different professions.
  • A wide range of viable builds, giving players plenty of freedom in how they approach combat and survival.
  • Quests and storylines that let you dig deeper into HUNGER’s world.
  • Endgame content, including dungeons and challenging boss encounters.
  • No forced wipes, so your progression won’t be reset between updates.
  • Proximity VOIP, letting you communicate with other players during Expeditions.
  • Gathering and crafting professions to support your survival and progression.
  • A player-driven marketplace where survivors can trade their goods.

How to Get Into the HUNGER Playtest

If HUNGER sounds like your kind of game, you can request access to the playtest right now! However, the developers have warned that they may close new access requests at any time, so it’s worth requesting an invite sooner rather than later if you don’t want to miss your chance.

With its mix of extraction gameplay, permanent RPG progression, and a plague-ravaged Napoleonic setting, HUNGER could be an interesting one to watch for fans of both extraction games and traditional RPGs. Just remember: in a world like this, the other survivors might be just as dangerous as the monsters.
