GTA 6 Took 8 Years, but Rockstar Says Its Next Game Won’t

In a Bloomberg feature on the making of GTA 6, Rockstar unveiled that nobody should expect another eight-year wait and the work that stretched this project is exactly what will shorten the next one.
Rockstar on GTA 6’s Development
GTA 6 has been in development for a whopping eight years, the longest project in the studio’s history. Bloomberg also reported two delays along the way. Rockstar’s tech director Phil Hooker and Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Bloomberg that the engine, tools, and team built for GTA 6 should speed up future game development. A Red Dead Redemption 3, anyone?
Why the Next Game Should Move Faster
Garbut said Rockstar changed a lot of things foundationally for GTA 6, and the studio doesn’t plan to rip that work apart. Hooker described the next project as moving “more sideways than upwards,” suggesting Rockstar can expand existing systems and add content instead of repeatedly rebuilding its core tech.
Now what Rockstar didn’t confirm is its next game or a release window, or which tools would be reused. Keep in mind this isn’t a GTA 7 announcement and the only commitment from the feature is a shorter dev cycle.
