FlyKnight Is a Hidden Gem That Just Got Even Better

FlyKnight is one of the hidden-gem indie titles I spent quite a bit of time with when it first launched, and now it’s giving me another reason to jump back in. The game just received a massive free update for all players, adding plenty of new content for returning players and anyone finally looking to give this fantastic little soulslike a shot.

What is FlyKnight?

FlyKnight is a wonderful, mystical, old-school souls-like dungeon crawler where you and maybe your friends play as some of the last squires from the order of the Flyknights who have come together to vanquish the witch Lunamoth and lift her curse on the denizens of the realm, which prevents them from growing wings.

All in all, FlyKnight literally oozes with personality, not just from an art style perspective, but from a technical perspective and even in combat as well. Moving, walking, and swinging your weapon all have a well-rounded emphasis on weight. Every attack you feel, each clashing blow of steel on steel feels great. Seriously, screenshots don’t do it justice.

A Game Unlike Any Other

Its art style feels entirely unique, but it also feels like it draws fragments and inspiration from early Souls titles or RuneScape. The combat, while sometimes simple, has a lot of depth thanks to its unique limb-based combat systems.

Every bug you encounter has a weakness. Chop off their arm, rendering them without a weapon, hack off a leg to prevent them from dodging or running away, or lop off their head to numb their senses. Each enemy is different, with unique ways to defeat them.

Combine that with a well-grounded stamina system, plus other mechanics like parrying, knowing the right angle to strike, or even knocking your opponent on their back when their guard is blown open.

Everything feels wonderfully dark, and yet cozy as well, and we could go on and on about the little design choices that really make this game pop out, like the health bar wrapping around your portrait. Or that your portrait bounces and moves as if you have a small camera always looking at your character’s head.

Plus, with a variety of magic, weapons, bows, and armor to discover or plunder, there’s a playstyle for everyone in FlyKnight.

Enhanced Edition Updates

The recent free Enhanced Edition patch also brought a ton of new features to the game as well. There are new weapons like Wands, Chitin Charms, Battletomes, and new Healing Flasks.

Or if you’ve already played FlyKnight before, there’s a brand new Hard Difficulty which brings in redesigned areas, new enemies, and redesigned boss fights. Still not enough for you? Try the new Randomizer, which moves items, enemy spawns, and other modes around to make your playthrough really different.

There’s also a new New Game+ mode, which makes the game harder each loop. Easily, all of this solves my number one problem with FlyKnight at launch: I simply ran out of things to do, but no longer.
