The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Gets a New Gameplay Showcase

The Witcher 3 Remastered and Songs of the Past were probably the biggest highlights of this year’s Gamescom! Between the pretty cool announcement trailer, the various Red Streams that went on during the entire event, and a ton of interviews and more, CD Projekt Red has definitely given us a lot to eat! And if you missed it, they just released a new Gamescom showcase for The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past that brings together the most important information from the expansion’s gameplay demo and offers a sneak peek at the new region, characters, monsters, and gameplay improvements.

The expansion takes Geralt to Letten, a new region described by CDPR as being comparable in size to the Blood and Wine expansion’s region. Inspired by the Polish and English countryside, Letten is known as the “Land of Plenty” and initially appears to be an idyllic part of the Continent, largely sheltered from the conflicts affecting the rest of the world.

However, there is more going on over there.

A New Adventure With Dandelion

Geralt’s journey to Letten is connected to his longtime friend Dandelion, whose homeland is the new region. The bard has returned home to deal with family matters, bringing Geralt along for the journey.

The showcase reveals Dandelion’s real name and noble heritage: Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove. His family home can be found in Letten, but people are not exactly celebrating his return. Black banners throughout the region signal that something has gone wrong. Geralt eventually investigates the Garden of Thorns alongside Lilla, Dandelion’s cousin, uncovering an old Lettenhove family legend and discovering that the peaceful region has a much darker side.

A More Lively Letten

Songs of the Past not only leads you to this beautiful but not so safe region, but it will also be much more “lively” than the previous ones. NPCs will have more complex daily routines and more detailed dialogue, for example, and the developers want to make Letten feel more alive and give its inhabitants more identities.

The Remastered update also brings various combat improvements, including changes to the camera and targeting behavior intended to make combat feel better and more precise, and also more accessibility options.

The Gamescom showcase also shows one of Letten’s new monsters: the Swarmion. This creature protects itself with a swarm of hornets, but Geralt has a new tool to deal with its defenses, because yes, you will finally be able to use the chain. This weapon can be used to target weak points and break through the Swarmion’s protection.

There is still a lot that CDPR is not showing, with the studio once again keeping major story details under wraps. The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is currently scheduled to launch in 2027, giving players plenty of time to return to the Path before Geralt’s latest adventure begins.
