The Blood of Dawnwalker Is Only the Beginning of a Saga
By Jaymo | YesterdayThe Blood of Dawnwalker is still very new and barely a week old, but a lot of people are starting to hit the end of the game and are already wondering where Rebel Wolves could take the story next. It turns out that there is a lot we already know about the future of the franchise. The studio has been really open about their plans for what they call the “Dawnwalker Saga”, and it is a lot more ambitious than simply making another game set in the same medieval world. Rebel Wolves wants to follow Coen across centuries, continents, cultures, and completely different eras.
And yes, your choices are planned to follow him along the way.
Coen Is Here to Stay

The most important part of the plan is that Coen is not just the protagonist of The Blood of Dawnwalker. He is intended to remain in the entire saga. That works pretty conveniently when your protagonist is a Dawnwalker, since Coen’s vampiric nature means he can live through vastly different periods of history and remain the same character. That means future games can introduce completely new settings and stories and still follow the same character you have already spent time with.
Rebel Wolves also said that future games will take place in different eras, locations, and cultures, with the saga eventually traveling through centuries and continents around the world.
And we have already seen just how far that idea could go. A teaser shown during Summer Game Fest featured Coen in a 21st-century setting, so you kind of know where the story is heading. Although I would not watch that teaser unless you finished the first game, because it is a bit spoilery about many things.
But well, overall it is a pretty wild jump from 14th-century Europe.
Rebel Wolves also does not want this to turn into one giant cliffhanger-filled story where you have to play every game to understand what is happening. Each game will be a standalone game with its own story, with no unresolved plot threads or narrative cliffhangers carrying over from one game to another. There are also no plans to use time travel as an explanation for the different eras. The conflict between Coen and Brencis, for example, gets its own definitive conclusion in The Blood of Dawnwalker. At the same time, there will be a bigger story connecting the saga together. Rebel Wolves has already confirmed that you can find breadcrumbs related to the overall plot throughout the first game. So if you are the type of player who reads every note, investigates every strange detail, and starts connecting completely unrelated pieces of lore, there may already be things in The Blood of Dawnwalker that become more meaningful later on.
And knowing this now makes some of those little details a lot more interesting.
Your Choices Could Follow You for Years

Perhaps the most interesting part of the entire plan is the idea that your save file will carry forward between games. Rebel Wolves has discussed the possibility of choices from The Blood of Dawnwalker being reflected in future games, meaning the decisions you make as Coen are not necessarily going to disappear when you finish the first game. That is a pretty big approach when you consider the scale of what the studio is planning.
Instead of simply making a new game with a new protagonist every few years, Rebel Wolves is building a story where the same character can experience entirely different periods of history, and the player’s previous decisions remain part of his journey.
It also means that some seemingly minor choices in The Blood of Dawnwalker could potentially become much more interesting when viewed from the perspective of a future game. This makes us wonder if we get a sort of choice at the start of the next game in case we changed console or PC in between and do not have our old save file anymore, or if the game will just pick randomly in that case.
The Future Could Look Very Different

The other exciting part is that Rebel Wolves is not planning to simply make The Blood of Dawnwalker 2 and give us another medieval European setting. The developers have said that future games will introduce new characters, new stories, new locations, cultures, and historical eras, and Coen just remains the constant throughout the saga.
That opens up a ridiculous number of possibilities. We have already been shown that the story can eventually reach the modern day, but there are potentially centuries of history between the events of the first game and that point. And if Rebel Wolves really commits to the idea, we could eventually see Coen’s journey move through completely different parts of the world, with each game offering its own setting and slowly building toward the bigger conflict.
There Is a Lot of Potential
Obviously, all of this depends on The Blood of Dawnwalker being successful enough for Rebel Wolves to keep building the franchise. But given how good it started, chances are we will at least get a few more. They did not announce exactly how many games the Dawnwalker Saga will contain, but the usual bet is some sort of trilogy, maybe. But this is just a personal guess, so do not take my word for it.
The foundation they have laid out is genuinely pretty exciting. The Blood of Dawnwalker already has a solid base. If future games can take that idea even further, Rebel Wolves could have something pretty special on their hands. The Blood of Dawnwalker works perfectly for the first chapter. So maybe we will eventually get something like The Rise of Dawnwalker, The Fall of Dawnwalker, or something completely different.
For now, though, we will have to wait and see where Coen’s very, very long life takes him next.
