Onimusha: Way of the Sword Gets a Free Official Prequel Webtoon

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is easily one of the best games of the year, and definitely a good contender for GOTY 2026! And if you have been enjoying it as much as we do, maybe you would also enjoy a little more of its story. Well in that case, Capcom has something pretty cool for you.

An official companion webtoon titled “Onimusha: Way of the Sword – Fated Rivalry” is now available for free on Webtoon, and it serves as a direct prequel to the game.

The first chapter is already available, and new chapters will be released every Saturday.

A Prequel Following Ganryu

The webtoon takes place shortly before the events of Way of the Sword and follows Sasaki Ganryu, the legendary swordsman and rival of Miyamoto Musashi. After being defeated by Musashi in a duel, Ganryu becomes obsessed with becoming strong enough to defeat him. This leads him to a mysterious artifact known as the Oni Gauntlet, that can grant him the power he needs to face Musashi once again.

When you live by the way of the sword, there’s only room for one at the top. Sasaki Ganryu has one goal: to become the strongest swordsman in the world. When a duel with the wandering samurai Miyamoto Musashi ends in humiliating defeat, Ganryu is consumed by rage. What follows is a bloody quest to reclaim his honor that leads him down a path of madness and obsession. On his journey, he receives a mysterious artifact known as “The Oni Gauntlet”, that gives him a power no mortal blade could ever match. Hunting down ever-stronger foes has set him on a collision course to face off again against the only man who has ever bested him in battle. A prologue to the latest game in Capcom’s iconic samurai action series: Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

So if you have already started Way of the Sword, this should provide some extra context for one of the game’s most important characters. The webtoon is being produced by Laurel Pursuit, with Webtoon creators jjolee, hilluhri, and BAEKSSE working on the series.
