Overwatch Sees Huge Growth Ahead of Season 4

Did Blizzard make the right move? It seems like they did indeed!

From what we can see, going back to Overwatch instead of Overwatch 2 may have been a pretty good move for them. According to a report from Windows Central, Overwatch recently delivered its strongest quarter since 2022, with Blizzard seeing huge growth for the game as it prepares to enter Season 4.

The Reign of Talon Changed Everything

The report did not just point out that they had their strongest quarter since 2022, but also noted that Blizzard has now achieved its first back-to-back years of growth since Overwatch originally launched in 2016, and even better, that Overwatch apparently came out on top among Xbox’s studios division.

This comes pretty much after Blizzard decided to drop the “2” from the game’s name and return to simply calling it Overwatch. The change was part of a big change for the game, and it appears to have resulted in a significant increase in its performance.

As a reminder, in February 2026, the game returned to its original name, Overwatch, and kicked off a new first Season of a year-long story arc called The Reign of Talon. The story follows Talon’s rise under the new character Vendetta that released not long ago, with comics, cinematics, and in-game events integrated into the gameplay. 5 new heroes were directly added when that first season launched, and 5 more were teased at that time. Right now, we have already obtained a few of these other 5 heroes, with D.Mon arriving with Season 4! There are 2 left to go now.

A New Beginning

Of course, the numbers alone do not prove that removing the “2” is directly responsible for the game’s growth. Overwatch has received plenty of updates and changes alongside the rebranding, so there are likely a few factors contributing to its very good performance this year. The goal with the change was to constantly deliver “expansion-like” updates annually, and so far, it seems they are indeed delivering!

Still, seeing the game post its best quarter since 2022 is certainly impressive, especially after many years where Overwatch struggled to maintain players with the sequel. Season 4 is also coming up soon, so it looks like Blizzard has managed to get Overwatch back into a better position. It will be interesting to see if the game will continue to grow like this over the next few years.
