The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu Gets a Major Combat Upgrade

By EncampedWeevil | 2 Days Ago

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu has had a rough launch, with fans praising its incredible visuals, art direction, and atmospheric horror while struggling with its somewhat clunky combat. Beyond the early optimization patches, one of the biggest requests from players was simple: give them more ways to defend themselves against the horrors lurking across the island. Thankfully, the latest patch finally answers those requests.

Brace Yourself Against Darkness

It’s been a few weeks since The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu launched, and the game has already experienced plenty of ups and downs. The developers have mostly fixed the performance problems that plagued the game during launch and its beta patch, but another problem continues to frustrate players: close-range combat.

Before the latest patch, engaging in close range with a monster almost guarantees you won’t walk away unscathed. Players could either run and hope their stamina lasted or pull out their guns and risk alerting every creature in the jungle. The game offered little room for other options. Your character can’t outrun monsters forever, and the lack of a dodge mechanic made close encounters especially difficult.

Of course, The Mound is a survival horror game, so players shouldn’t expect to cut through monsters with ease. The game wants you to feel vulnerable, and stealth should remain a perfectly valid strategy. However, the latest patch finally gives players another option by adding a brand-new blocking mechanic.

The developers are also keeping a close eye on the mechanic and how it affects the overall flow of combat and player survival. Depending on how players adapt to the new system, further adjustments could follow in future updates.
