Did Xbox CEO Just Tease The Elder Scrolls VI?

By Jaymo | Today at 10:18am

The Elder Scrolls VI has been one of those games we have heard about for so long that even the smallest update is enough to get everyone as excited as kids opening their Christmas presents. And Xbox CEO Asha Sharma may have just given us one of the most interesting updates we have had so far about this very mysterious game.

Yesterday, Sharma revealed that she recently got to experience a live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI, and she had some pretty good things to say about what she saw.

“The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater.”

It is a very simple sentence, but in a way, it means a lot. Especially since Bethesda has kept extremely silent about the game for years. But Sharma’s post also included something else: a mysterious subtitle.

The Elder Scrolls VI: ********

In her post, Sharma referred to the game as:

The Elder Scrolls VI: ********

Yep, eight asterisks.

Obviously, people immediately started wondering if those eight characters are really meant to represent the length of the game’s subtitle, or if it is just a random number. But why even put asterisks if it is random? Sharma could simply have used the asterisks to hide the subtitle without intending to indicate the exact number of letters, but if this was the case, she could have just put “The Elder Scrolls VI” without adding anything to it. Still, if the eight-character clue is deliberate, it gives fans something to talk about.

Players started to speculate about the subtitle, pointing out that if it has 8 letters, it means that it is probably not “Hammerfell” then. One particularly obvious possibility would be Redguard. The name has an obvious connection to The Elder Scrolls’ lore, but there is currently nothing suggesting that this is really what Bethesda has chosen.

It could just as easily be another word entirely.

The Game Is Clearly Running Internally

The more important part of Sharma’s post may be the fact that she has now played a live build of The Elder Scrolls VI. This clearly means that they are indeed working on it, and that things are moving forward enough for them to show early gameplay. That does not necessarily mean the game is close to release, though. Bethesda has still not announced a release date or even a proper launch window for The Elder Scrolls VI. The fact that Xbox executives can now sit down and play through the game is encouraging, but there is still a huge difference between having a playable internal build and being ready to launch a massive open-world RPG.

Still, after more than eight years since The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced, it is hard not to get excited when someone at Xbox casually posts that they have just played it and that it is amazing.

Now we just need Bethesda to show it to the rest of us.
