Fortnite Override Is a Huge Celebration of Video Game Legends

Epic Games has officially gone completely crazy with the next Fortnite season.

Called Fortnite: Override, the new season launches on August 20 and is being presented as a huge celebration of video game history, bringing together characters and franchises that honestly have no business being in the same game.

And, of course, it is exactly why it works.

If you thought all the Anime, movies, and other characters that appeared in Fortnite so far were insane, then you are not ready for what is to come! The basic idea behind Override is pretty simple: “Break the rules, change the game.” Jonesy is transported into a digital world, and from there, Fortnite basically becomes one giant crossover between different eras and games. And there are a lot of familiar faces.

Sonic, Mega Man, Persona 5 and More

As you can see, the trailer is full of cameos and collaborations, including some franchises that Fortnite fans have been asking about for years. Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the biggest faces of the season, with Tails also appearing in his rather adorable blocky form. Dr. Eggman is here too, because obviously you cannot have Sonic without Eggman causing problems. Then there is Joker from Persona 5, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and some characters from Mortal Kombat, including Scorpion, Raiden, and Kitana. The trailer also features the deer from 99 Nights in the Forest, bringing a Roblox game into this already ridiculous collection of gaming crossovers.

And somehow, that is still not everything. Other confirmed franchises are:

• Tetris
• Pac Man
• Jazz Jackrabbit
• Mega Man

It is honestly the kind of trailer where you probably need to pause every few seconds just to figure out what you just saw.

And it is still not everything. The cover art for the Season shows way more characters from other games than those you see in the trailer. The biggest surprise is probably Sora! Yes, Sora from Kingdom Hearts is visible on the official Override season artwork. That is pretty damn interesting considering how much speculation there has been around a possible Kingdom Hearts collaboration. However, Sora was not shown in the official trailer, and Epic has not officially confirmed exactly what his appearance on the artwork means or when he could arrive. So for now, I am keeping this firmly in the “very interesting” category, and I am not calling Sora a confirmed Fortnite skin.

There are also plenty of other characters appearing on that artwork, including:

• Halo
• Street Fighter
• Tomb Raider
• The Witcher
• Beyond Good & Evil
• Blade from Honkai Star Rail
• PEAK
• And more!

It is unknown if these will just appear as skins, or if we get specific zones, events, or worlds around them, but one thing is sure: Epic Games went really… well… Epic with that one!

It Is Not Just About Skins

What is particularly interesting about Override is that Epic does not seem to be treating all of these collaborations as simple cosmetics. A few of the trailer’s sequences show that different franchises will influence the gameplay. There is a high-speed sequence that very clearly evokes Sonic, and Mega Man’s Mega Buster can be seen being used as a weapon. Tails also appears to have a role as a means of transportation, and a 1UP coin makes an appearance. Epic has not explained exactly what the coin does yet, though, so we will have to wait until the season launches to find out.

That is potentially the coolest part of Override.

Fortnite has obviously done an enormous number of collaborations at this point, but there is a difference between dropping a character into the Item Shop and incorporating elements from their games into the island. If Epic follows through on that idea, Override could feel more like a playable celebration of video games, and not just another collection of crossover skins.

The Battle Pass Is Getting In on It Too

The Override Battle Pass launches alongside the season on August 20 and continues the video game theme. A trailer for the Pass has also been released already, and it seems themed around 64Bits!

Sonic and a few others are among the collaborations associated with the Battle Pass, alongside original Fortnite characters designed with a 64Bits style. The whole point of the season seems to be taking recognizable elements from gaming history and asking, “What if we put that in Fortnite?”

Of course, the Battle Pass is not where the collaborations end either. A lot of the characters will probably appear in the Item Shop as skins. Exact release dates for all of these collaborations have not been announced yet, so we will have to wait and see when each character arrives.

Fortnite Is Basically Becoming a Gaming Museum

That is probably what makes Override so interesting. Fortnite has already established itself as the ultimate crossover game, but this season feels like Epic is leaning into that idea even harder. You have got Sonic and Tetris, two completely different pieces of gaming history. You have got Persona 5, Mega Man, Crash, Spyro and Pac-Man sitting alongside Fortnite characters.

And then there are all the other games from the cover artwork thrown into the mix.

It is completely ridiculous. But it is also kind of fitting for Fortnite.

The game has always been about adding a ton of different collaborations to the game. We have had things like Marvel heroes, Anime characters, movie or other game characters, and it is what always made the beauty of the game. Gathering so many communities together inside one single little game. So having an entire season around basically gathering the entire history of gaming together, it is definitely interesting!

Fortnite Override launches August 20, and if the trailer is anything to go by, the Island is about to become one of the strangest video game crossover events we have ever seen.
