1001 Threads of Mizan Is a New Co-Op Adventure Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights

This year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live feels like it was something else. They gave us yet another new game to keep an eye on, with 1001 Threads of Mizan officially revealed by MBC Game Studio.

Inspired by the world of One Thousand and One Nights and a lot of Arabic folklore, 1001 Threads of Mizan is an action-adventure game built around exploration, fast-paced combat, and cooperative play.

And yes, you can fly around the world on a magic carpet with your friends.

What Is 1001 Threads of Mizan?

1001 Threads of Mizan takes place in a beautiful Arabian fantasy world inspired by the stories and folklore of One Thousand and One Nights. The story follows three unlikely heroes, Yusra, Malik, and Sufyan, who are brought together by the legendary Storyweaver, Shahrazad.

Their journey revolves around rediscovering the lost power of the Mizan and stopping an ancient jinn king before his thirst for vengeance threatens humanity.

The game is being developed by MBC Game Studio, a new studio led by CEO Daniel Engelhardt and COO Trevor Williams. The team includes developers with experience at studios such as BioWare, Hi-Rez, Ubisoft Montréal and Bungie.

But the game’s biggest strength might be how you are going to get around its world.

Yes, You Can Fly Around on a Magic Carpet

Flying carpets are not just there because they look cool. They are apparently at the heart of 1001 Threads of Mizan’s traversal and gameplay systems. You can fly through the game’s world and even combine aerial movement with more grounded exploration and combat.

The developers say the system is designed to give players a sense of speed and freedom as they explore the world, and it will also open up new possibilities for gameplay and storytelling.

And since the game is designed around co-op, you will be able to take to the skies with your friends!

3-Player Drop-In, Drop-Out Co-Op

1001 Threads of Mizan supports up to three players in co-op, with drop-in, drop-out multiplayer. That means you and up to two friends can explore the world together, take on enemies, and fight some of the game’s much bigger bosses.

The game’s co-op side seems to be an important part of the overall design, and not just something simply added on top. Creative Director Lars Bonde explained that the team’s vision was to create an adventure with the scale and ambition of a traditional single-player epic, but one that could be experienced cooperatively with friends.

“Our vision started with a simple question, ‘what if you could experience an expansive adventure in the grand tradition of single-player epics, but fully cooperatively with your friends?'” said Lars Bonde, Creative Director. “We were inspired by the generation of players who grew up in shared, social worlds, and with 1001 Threads of Mizan, we are bringing that sense of connection into the fast-paced, combat-driven gameplay experience we believe co-op players will expect as they discover the depth of this incredible folklore that combines fantasy with rich history and culture.”

And the Gamescom demo gives players a taste of exactly that.

Colossal Jinn Bosses

Combat will see players going up against some pretty huge creatures, with jinn playing a big role in the game’s encounters. The Gamescom demo culminates in a battle against Nazjush, described as a menacing and all-powerful jinn. The demo is specifically designed to showcase the game’s co-op gameplay and flight combat, so it should give players a pretty good idea of how the aerial traversal system and large-scale battles fit together.

When Is 1001 Threads of Mizan Coming Out?

There is currently no release date for 1001 Threads of Mizan. The game is still in development, with a playable pre-alpha demo being shown at Gamescom this week. It is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

So there is still quite a bit of development ahead before we will be able to play the full game.

For now, though, 1001 Threads of Mizan is an interesting new game, and definitely worth keeping an eye on!
