HoYoverse Unveils Nodusfall, Its New Monster-Hunting Co-Op Game
By Jaymo | Today at 10:48amApparently, HoYoverse can do more than just gacha games! This was definitely not what I expected from them. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, HoYoverse unveiled Nodusfall, a new action game that looks very different from the studio’s usual anime style. Instead of another gacha open-world RPG, Nodusfall is built around co-op, huge mythical creatures, and intense battles where players have to work together to take down enemies.
And yes, if your first thought after watching the trailer was “wait, is HoYoverse making Monster Hunter?”, you are definitely not alone.
Nodusfall Is a Co-Op Action Game
Nodusfall takes place in a world where the Divine has fallen silent after an unknown calamity corrupted the very threads of creation. You take on the role of Weavers, mysterious beings created by the Divine to investigate the source of the calamity. Unfortunately, the Weavers fell into the mortal world before they could discover the truth.
Now, you have to explore this shattered world, form bonds with powerful companions, and fight the creatures that have been corrupted by the catastrophe.
The game seems to be a 4-player co-op from what we can see. This is just a guess, however. We know it is co-op, but the number of players you can team up with is currently just based on how big the team was in the trailer. But what we do know is that each player can customize their characters using different combat styles and skill combinations, so you can create whatever setup you like. More importantly, you can apparently switch roles and loadouts depending on the fight.
That should make the co-op element particularly important, because the best setup for one creature may not necessarily be the best setup for another. You will have to adapt to what you are fighting and work with the rest of your team.
You Are Hunting Mythical Creatures
The biggest thing that immediately stands out about Nodusfall is its monsters. HoYoverse describes the game as a world filled with legendary beings inspired by mythologies from around the world, ranging from enormous beasts rooted in Eastern folklore to gigantic dragons capable of bringing chaos to the world.
The trailer gives us a look at a few of these creatures, and they are definitely not your average enemies.

These are huge monsters that require players to coordinate their attacks and look for openings. Spamming buttons randomly is probably not going to work on these!
HoYoverse describes every encounter as a “test of both teamwork and tactical adaptability.”
So yes, this is very much a game about getting your friends together and figuring out how you are going to take down something significantly larger than yourselves.
Defeating Monsters Gives You Their Power
This is probably one of the more interesting systems shown in the announcement. Defeating powerful creatures does not just give you generic rewards. You can basically seize the power of defeated enemies, unlocking new weapons and abilities that can then be used to further develop your characters.
The game refers to these as Divine Skills, and they appear to be an important part of the game.
So you pretty much have to! Find a powerful creature → fight it with your team → defeat it → claim its power → unlock new abilities and equipment → take on something even more dangerous.
It is a formula that should feel familiar to anyone who enjoys monster-hunting games, but Nodusfall is putting its own mythology and progression systems around it.
Nodusfall Is Still Very Early in Development
There is an important disclaimer attached to the reveal: Nodusfall is still in development. The trailer contains a mixture of gameplay footage and in-engine cinematics, all captured using Unreal Engine 5, but HoYoverse has made it clear that the footage does not necessarily represent the final product. For now, there is no release date yet either, so there is currently no telling how long we will have to wait before we can get our hands on it.
But it is a pretty interesting new direction for HoYoverse. A co-op monster-hunting action game is something we have not seen from them before. And if the idea of teaming up with friends to fight giant creatures, steal their powers, and build different loadouts sounds interesting to you, Nodusfall might be one to keep an eye on.
