Marvel’s Wolverine Will Run at 60 FPS With Ray Tracing on Base PS5

By Jaymo | Today at 11:30am

Insomniac Games has revealed some pretty good news for players planning to play Marvel’s Wolverine on a standard PS5! Speaking with IGN, senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed and Insomniac’s head of technology, Mike Fitzgerald, confirmed that the game will run at 60 FPS with ray tracing on the base PS5, and, even better, this will be the game’s default mode.

That is a first for Insomniac.

60 FPS With Ray Tracing Was the Goal From the Start

According to Reiner-Reed, Insomniac knew relatively early in development that they wanted Marvel’s Wolverine to target 60 FPS on the standard PS5. The team was able to achieve that goal, with the game designed around the performance target instead of treating it as something added later. Fitzgerald also explained that Insomniac has traditionally offered separate fidelity and performance modes, sometimes adding a performance mode with ray tracing toward the end of development after realizing the game could handle it.

Wolverine was approached differently.

This time, the studio decided from the beginning that the game would be built around 60 FPS with ray tracing, making it the default presentation on PS5. And considering just how Marvel’s Wolverine is expected to be, that should be particularly welcome. A smoother 60 FPS target should make Logan’s fast melee combat feel considerably more responsive, especially when chaining attacks and dodging enemies.

Insomniac Is Pushing Destruction Further

The technical ambitions of Marvel’s Wolverine do not stop at frame rate and ray tracing. Unlike the Spider-Man games that are more focused on a single large city environment, Wolverine takes you through a much wider variety of locations. Insomniac specifically mentioned the Canadian wilderness, Madripoor, and the jungles seen at the beginning of the game. That has required the studio to develop new technology for things such as foliage. Plants and vegetation can react to wind, characters, and the surrounding environment, making the game’s areas feel more dynamic.

But there is another huge focus: destruction.

Logan Is Going to Leave a Mess Behind

Wolverine is not exactly known for being gentle, so Insomniac wanted the world to react accordingly. Fitzgerald explained that the team did not want players to fight through a large group of enemies only to walk away from the battle and find everything looking completely untouched. A large number of props throughout the game are therefore destructible and physically reactive.

Market stalls, tables and other objects can splinter and fly apart during combat, meaning the environment should look like it has been through a fight once Logan is finished with his enemies.

That seems like a particularly fitting approach for Wolverine.

“Logan’s a really destructive character. The aftermath after you fight a big battle, we wanted to make sure you didn’t feel like you were defeating a bunch of The Hand and then walking out of this pristine market that you happened to be in. So most of the props in the game are destructible, react in physically accurate ways. We invested a ton in that technology. So market stalls and tables and everything around you is splintering and flying off as you’re doing combat.”

Collectibles, Whiskey, Nightmare Doors, and More

Outside of the revelations around FPS and destruction, Insomniac has also revealed details about the game’s progression and replayability, and other activities! So here is a small recap of everything you can discover or do in the game:

  • New Game Plus will be available from day one
  • Nightmare missions
    • Described as manifestations of the horrible things happening inside Logan’s mind
  • The possibility to replay individual chapters
    • Making it easier to return to previous areas and collect anything you may have missed
  • Collectibles:
    • Whiskey bottles can be found throughout the game and will contribute to Wolverine’s progression
    • Material crates containing resources used to unlock new suits
  • Nightmare Doors
    • Contain unique trials for players to complete
  • Adaptation features
    • Possibility to increase the difficulty
    • Make Logan more aggressive and more powerful
    • Some are only accessible in New Game Plus

All of this is basically made so you feel like replaying the game over and over again to discover new things and new ways to play.

60 FPS with ray tracing being default on the base PS5is probbaly the most important part of all of this, but it is also nice to see how much effort has been put into making the game replayable. And with the game launching on September 15, 2026, we will not have to wait much longer to see how well Insomniac managed to pull it off.
